Greetings, Weekenders!

It looks like our weeks of sunshine are coming to a close, but there’s plenty of great stuff to look forward to nonetheless.

THURSDAY

Phantogram w. Josiah Wolf | The Blue Moose Tap House | 6 p.m. | $12, all ages

Electronic/rock duo Phantogram is astounding. They’ve already gained notoriety in Iowa City for upstaging an Antlers headlining show at the Blue Moose Tap House. Now they return, as sure as ever, with their slick beats, lilting vocals, and sick guitar hooks to tear up Iowa City in their own right. Be sure to check out their excellent Daytrotter session before coming to the show.

They are joined by Josiah Wolf who is stepping out solo after having worked with younger brother Yoni in droney jangly hip-hop groups Why?, Apogee, Clouddead and probably others. Why? played the Mill a few years ago and it’s the only time I’ve seen them live, but I remember being totally confused by their drummer, Josiah. Not to get all poetic on you, but when he pulled out these rhythms, I couldn’t help but recall the great Humpty Hump:

First I limp to the side like my leg was broken
Shakin’ and twitchin’ kinda like I was smokin’
Crazy wack funky
People say ya look like M.C. Hammer on crack, Humpty
That’s all right ’cause my body’s in motion
It’s supposed to look like a fit or a convulsion
Anyone can play this game
This is my dance, y’all, Humpty Hump’s my name
No two people will do it the same
Ya got it down when ya appear to be in pain
Humpin’, funkin’, jumpin’,
jig around, shakin’ ya rump,
and when the dude a chump pump points a finger like a stump
tell him step off, I’m doin’ the Hump.

Don’t make me be the dude a chump pump pointing a finger like a stump. Avoid that. Showing up on time so you can dig Josiah Wolf opening for Phantogram.

FRIDAY

Max Weinberg Big Band | The Englert | 8 p.m. | $25-30

Let’s just be all about drummers for a couple of days, shall we? Max Weinberg brings his big band to the Englert this Friday night, and aren’t you curious what he’s going to do? Read Kent Williams’ recent interview/feature from the October issue of Little Village for an idea of what Max has in store for us.

SATURDAY

Iowa vs. Wisconsin | Kinnick Stadium | 2:35 p.m. | Sold Out

Alright, let me geek out on football for a second. If Iowa beats Wisconsin (who, last weekend, knocked Ohio State out of national title contention), they will be sitting at the top of the Big Ten, sharing the lead with Michigan State, both undefeated in the conference (assuming Michigan State beats visiting Purdue this weekend). THEN, next weekend, the Hawks will play Michigan State at home for the conference lead. Of course Iowa will still have to play Ohio State (also at Kinnick, November 20), but this is getting pretty fun. With 4 teams in the top 15 nationally, the Big Ten is the top conference in the country! If you’ve got any love for college sports at all, it’s a pretty great time to be a Hawkeye.

Oh, and Saturday it’s going to be cold and rainy. Not really a perfect afternoon for anything, except a Big Ten showdown!

Have a great weekend,

~LV
