This is a bit of a slow weekend in Iowa City. There are a lot of sports events this weekend, but that’s not the focus of this column. They don’t pay me in beer and chewing gum to talk about sports. They pay me in real (paper) money to talk about culture and the arts around this fair city of ours. Let’s do that! Remember: if you have a smartphone and like reading the weekender, subscribe to the email version. Not only can you read it in full, you can also see the videos and everything all from your phone. I think that’s pretty cool. With that out of the way, let’s give you something to do for the next couple of days.

THURSDAY

John Carlson | MacBride Hall | 7:00 PM | Free, All Ages

As we have all either seen An Inconvenient Truth or keep up with the news, most people know that the globe isn’t doing so well. There has been much discussion of a world with cap-and-trade emissions regulation. For those who have been keeping up with this know that it has been hard to come to an agreement on the topic. The other option that is on the table is geoengineering, or the deliberate modification of the earth’s ecosystem to change weather. Some believe that geoengineering systems are already in development if not being actively tested currently. UI Law Professor John Carlson will speak on the legal ramifications of geoengineering in what should be a rather interesting lecture for those who are concerned for the immediate future of our planet (the long term future is already determined, with or without us).

FRIDAY

Sophistifunk .01: Warmth | Gabe’s | 9:00 PM | Free, 21+ / Beat Resonance | Blue Moose | 10:00 PM | Free, 21+

Given the proximity that we have to one of the birthplaces of electronic music (Chicago, for those of you who don’t go this road), it is only fitting that there be a permanent dance music residency somewhere in Iowa City. This weekend returns with Sophistifunk, an intimate monthly gathering at Gabe’s that is organized by NuVibe Recordings. House, Techno, and their variants will be the currency of this event that will bring DJs from the region and globe in. If you want to dance, but would like a different style, head over to the Blue Moose for Beat Resonance. They will be doing mash-ups all night for your ass-shaking pleasure. Either way, the urge to dance should be well satiated by these nights.

SATURDAY

Yoga Marathon | Heartland Yoga | 8:00 AM | Free, All Ages

Have all of your friends been talking about this yoga stuff? Do you need some relaxation or want some flexibility? If you can answer yes to either of these questions, you should go to Heartland Yoga for their 2nd Annual Yoga Marathon. Classes will start hourly and allow novices and experienced folk to practice yoga together.

8th Anniversary Party | Iowa City Yacht Club | 3:00 PM | $8, All Ages

In the 19-teens, some folks built a red brick building on the 0 block of S. Linn St. In 2003, a young, enterprising group renovated the building and opened it as the Iowa City Yacht Club, the place that caters to those that like dancing whether it’s to the School of Flyentology or a traveling jam band. For eight years, the Yacht Club has firmly cemented itself in this city’s music scene. To celebrate its birthday as well as the support that it has been given over the years, they will be having an anniversary show featuring Dead Larry, Lick it Ticket, Amanda Miller & The Super Secrets, Bermuda Report, Porch Builder, Item 9 & The Mad Hatters, Chasing Shade, and River Glen. This will be a nice treat for those who have been loyal to the Yacht Club or want to find out more about it.

HOTT w/ The Box Knives, Bob Burns, Lipstick Homicide, All Dinosaurs | Blue Moose | 7:00 PM | $6, All Ages

There aren’t too many things that you can say about a band named HOTT that will not devolve into a sex joke, so I won’t try. I will say that they rock hard, are local, and always bring intensity to their live show. They are popular here amongst LV staff, and that should be a note on quality within itself. HOTT will be headline a bill that is filled with quality local rockers like Lipstick Homicide, another band you should totally check out if you haven’t before. It will be a nice way to spend some time partying with Iowa City.

Have a good weekend, everyone.
