The Mission Creek Festival may seem to have swept through the entirety of Iowa City this week, but there are still some other great shows going on outside of its auspices. Tonight at 8 p.m., Trumpet Blossom Cafe will host Washington’s Generifus (touring in support of the reissue of his album I Don’t Have to Worry), Iowa City songwriter Liv Carrow and Us-mode from the Quad Cities.

Carrow says the event is styled as a sort of “DIY showcase” — all three acts have been involved in the DIY music scene on their own turfs. The fact that the show falls during Mission Creek was unintentional, and Carrow is thrilled that the venue supported their desire to go ahead with it anyway. “I think Iowa City can support many layers of a music culture in the way that a big city can,” says Carrow, who has experience in both New York City and Philadelphia, “but scaled appropriately.”

Carrow also has shows coming up at Daytrotter on Apr. 17, Des Moines Social Club on May 29 and Danforth Chapel with Sam Moss, Brooks Strause and Milk n Eggs on May 28.

Genevieve Trainor lives in Iowa City, Iowa. Passions include heavy music, hoppy beer, and hidden rooms.
