The Ped Mall has a new free wi-fi service.
The Iowa City Downtown District (ICDD) has partnered with Cedar Rapids-based ImOn Communications to provide free high-speed wireless internet access on the Ped Mall, it was announced on Tuesday.
“ImOn’s ability to upgrade our current system and deliver lighting [sic] fast speeds is really critical to Downtown vibrancy,” Nancy Bird, Iowa City executive director, said in press release issued by ImOn. “Their support of the Ped Mall free public Wi-Fi will give a huge lift to our local employee and student base who enjoys working outside on beautiful days, as well as those looking to connect for special cultural events.”
There will be a two-hour per day limit for the free access, but ImOn customers will have unlimited access.
The wi-fi network will be connected to ImOn’s 10 gigabit fiber optic network, using a 5GHz signal.
According to ImOn’s site, the company already provides free public wi-fi in “downtown Cedar Rapids, McGrath Amphitheatre, NewBo City Market, Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, and all public parks in Hiawatha.”
The ICDD had previously used the North Liberty-based South Slope Cooperative Communications to provide free wi-fi on the Ped Mall.
