FilmScene’s Scene 1 theater will be screening Blue is the Warmest Color this Friday and Saturday as part of a sneak preview event. The film recently won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and has drawn significant critical praise.
Blue is the Warmest Color is adapted from the award-winning French graphic novel Blue Angel, released in North America last month. A coming-of-age story, Blue… follows the young woman Adele as she falls in love with Emma, an art student at a nearby college. The movie has been lauded for its naturalism and rawness, as well as for the performances of the two leads, which convinced the Cannes jury to award the Palme d’Or to director Abdellatif Kechiche, as well as the lead actresses Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux — a first in Cannes’ history.
The film, rated NC-17, has drawn some controversy for it’s lengthy and intense sex scenes. Posture Magazine, a queer arts publication, asked gay women to discuss the sex scenes, and while some described the scenes as “hot,” many of the women also criticized the scenes as being unrealistic and pornographic — which, if we’re being honest, might not be a drawback for some audiences.
Screenings of Blue is the Warmest Color will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday as well as Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Ticket information is available here. This sneak preview leads up to FilmScene’s grand opening weekend starting Thursday, November 28.
Blue is the Warmest Color will return to Scene 1 for a week-long engagement on December 6.
