City Carton warehouse burns down

The former City Carton Recycling warehouse, now owned by the waste management company Republic Services, was destroyed by a fire on Friday. According to the Iowa City Fire Department (ICFD), a fire in the building at 3 E Benton St. was first reported at 4:17 p.m.

It took firefighters two hours to get the fire under control. The ICFD units that responded were assisted by off-duty ICFD firefighters, as well as by fire departments from Coralville, Hills, Riverside, Lone Tree, Swisher, Solon, Tiffin and West Branch.

No other buildings were damaged. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
