Caroline Smith & The Good Night Sleeps opened the Leslie & The Lys show at the Englert during the Mission Creek Festival, and while they were not as outre as Bitch or as goofy as Leslie Hall, they were some quality music. Caroline Smith has an unconventional voice, recalling Billy Holiday’s fragile, intimate delivery, but her songs are thoughtful, well constructed and tuneful as well.

On Sunday night (Jan 2, 2011 7PM) she’ll be performing at The Beauty Shop in Fairfield, IA (105 south main street) in the Bonnell Building. The cover is $3. From what I gather The Beauty Shop is an art-centric non-commercial performance space, like White Lightning Wherehouse in Iowa City, but it looks more tidy and intimate. And I assume there will be no dumpster by the front door, or gutter punks sipping pints of whiskey and smoking rollies for that matter.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course. What I’m trying to say is that it will have a Fairfield vibe, and make a great road trip. Go early and eat on the square!
