Another fixture on the Iowa City scene is changing hands as 2017 draws to a close. On Sunday, Sanctuary Pub owner Daryl Woodson announced on Facebook that he is retiring from the S. Gilbert St. pub. Earlier this month, it was announced that a new owner is taking of Devotay at the beginning of the new year.

Toy drive for the kids of Cedar Rapids hotel employees, where workers say they haven’t been paid in weeks
First it was no paychecks. Now workers at what used to be the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center in Cedar Rapids are facing the possibility of no Christmas for their children. “There’s some people who haven’t been paid in going on a month and a half,” Ted Canfield, who works in the maintenance department of the hotel on 33rd Ave SW, told Little Village. A number of other hotel workers have posted the same online.

More than 200 neglected chickens, ducks and other birds removed from farm near Solon
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa City Animal Services removed more than 200 birds from an abandoned farmstead two mile southeast of Solon on Saturday. The 110 ducks and geese, 76 chickens and 49 pigeons were being kept in filthy conditions in sheds, without proper access to water, the Sheriff’s Office told The Gazette. The bodies of numerous dead birds were also found on the property, but it hasn’t been determined how those birds died.

Greenhouse gas emissions decline in Iowa as renewable energy use increases
Iowa’s greenhouse gas emissions decreased last year, thanks, in part, to increases in the amount of wind and solar power the state is producing, according to a new report from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The 2016 Iowa Statewide Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Report shows the state emitted 128 million metric tons of greenhouse gases, a decrease of two percent from 2015 levels.

Democrat Fred Hubbell: Iowa is wasting too much money on corporate giveaways
Fred Hubbell wants to end the corporate giveaways the state has been handing out in the name of economic development. “What I see right now is that we’ve got so many wasteful giveaways in our tax code for companies that aren’t creating a decent return for us,” the Democratic candidate for governor said during a visit to the offices of Little Village on Sunday. “And we’re compounding that with deals like the Apple deal. We’re giving away money to companies that don’t need it and not creating many permanent jobs.”

UI Art Museum’s new name celebrates both a recent gift and one of its most important collections
It was announced this week that the University of Iowa Art Museum will be renamed the University of Iowa Stanley Art Museum. The decision follows a donation of $10 million from Dick and Mary Jo Stanley of Muscatine. “The Stanley family has made an indelible mark on our university — and on the art world — and we are proud to name the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art in honor of their gift,” UI President Bruce Harreld said in a press release.

Cardboard will be banned from Iowa City garbage bins starting next year
As Iowa City residents haul the remains of their New Year’s Eve to curb, they’ll need to remember a new regulation: no cardboard in the garbage bin. Starting Jan. 2, a ban on corrugated cardboard at the Iowa City Landfill goes into effect. Corrugated cardboard (the sort of cardboard construction that has two pieces connected by a wavy layer of cardboard) may be placed in or under curbside recycling bins — boxes should be broken down, with pieces no larger than 2 ft. by 2 ft. — or taken to a recycling facility.

Grassley tweets: He’s upset by a Senate snub, but loves what Trump is doing
Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley was up early Thursday morning, and judging by Twitter, he wasn’t happy. At 5:23 a.m., Iowa’s senior senator vented to fellow early-morning tweeter President Donald Trump about not being appointed to the conference committee that will reconcile the tax bill passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate. On Wednesday evening, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell appointed eight Republicans to the committee.
