Mardi Gras Celebration
Feb. 12 I 5 p.m. $40
(101 S. Augusta Ave Oxford, IA)
After being displaced by Hurricane Katrina, Ben and Jeri Halperin moved to Iowa and opened Augusta Restaurant in Oxford Iowa. Receiving culinary training as staff for celebrity chefs Susan Spicer (Bayona, HBO’s Treme, Bravo’s Top Chef) and Gerard Meras (Brennans), they serve up a variety of Midwestern favorites (such as an award-winning pork tenderloin–once named Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwich in Iowa by the Iowa Pork Producers Association), all with signature creole flair.
In tribute to their Big Easy roots, the Halperins throw an annual Mardi Gras Party the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. This year’s celebration, slated for Feb. 12, carries a $40 cover charge and will include raffles, a costume contest, second line dancing, a free hurricane cocktail for those of-age and a buffet of traditional fare including red beans and rice, jambalaya, etouffee, andouille sausage and chicken gumbo, fried chicken, a shrimp boil with cajun seasonings, corn, potatoes and, of course, a king cake.
The cozy restaurant will surely be hopping as The Big and Easy Band (a side project of John Shultz and John Heim, from Eastern Iowa’s Moe Band) will be there performing New Orleans-style jazz.
