The Eye Opener

FilmScene — Sunday, Dec. 6 at 11 a.m.

This Sunday, FilmScene will host its second annual “The Eye Opener” community appreciation event.

Executive Director Joe Tiefenthaler says the event is a perfect, informal way to reconnect with the arts community. “What better way to remember the films, partner events, volunteer and board efforts… to remember that Jim Jarmusch and Terry Gilliam visited our cinema… than with fried chicken and waffles?”

The event begins with brunch at 11 a.m., catered by Oxford, Iowa’s Augusta Restaurant. Bloody Marys, Mimosas and a cash bar will also be available throughout the day. Afterwards, FilmScene will screen a short film by esteemed filmmaker Don Hertzfeldt (selected by program director Andy Brodie). The theatre will also host a silent movie poster auction and conduct an awards ceremony to honor an outstanding volunteer and key community supporters who made major contributions to FilmScene’s success. As a nod to their 2015 season, FilmScene will also play film soundtracks from their 2015 programming year throughout the event.

“It’s one small way we can honor the tremendous contributions from the people that make FilmScene more than a movie theater,” said FilmScene co-founder Andrew Sherburne.

As for 2016, FilmScene plans to add a youth and community education program, revamp their lobby and open a second cinema space in their existing location. The 40-seat space, dubbed “Screening Room,” would allow FilmScene to schedule encores, special screenings and educational programming for both youth and adults. The theatre is currently conducting a crowdfunding campaign in support of the second space.
