Ah yes, Supersonic Piss. Iowa City’s scary heavy metal punk rock cosmic bummer band. When I first heard the band name, I flashed on visiting the Omaha Zoo’s rain forest when the tapirs were in heat. Their courtship seemed to involve a stealthy yet brutal assault by the male, which the female answered with a […]

Album Review – William Elliott Whitmore: Field Songs
Will Whitmore grew up in Lee County Iowa near the shore of the Mississippi River. He makes a living singing for people, accompanying himself on guitar and banjo. He writes simple songs, in the American acoustic folk music idiom. Field Songs is his latest record and comprises eight songs that say what they have to […]
Album Review – Billy Raygun/Lipstick Homicide: Split LP
Lipstick Homicide (Kate Kane, Rachel Feldman and Lucas Ferguson) have been making a big noise in Iowa City for six years or so, starting out at West High School. If you haven’t seen them play live, then you don’t get out much–and you’ve missed out. Their live sound is an exquisitely textured roar made up […]
Album Review – Finnders and Youngberg: FY5
It’s tempting to classify Finnders and Youngberg as a bluegrass band based on the mastery of the fiddle, banjo and mandolin on display in FY5. But those aren’t the only ingredients in this recipe. “It’s definitely more of a country outfit than what Amy and I were doing… but probably where I was heading all […]
Interview with Author Madeline McDonnell
On Thursday July 28, Madeline McDonnell will be reading at Prairie Lights with fellow Rescue Press author Andrea Rexilius. I sat down with her to talk about her writing, teaching, and her work as a lexicographer for the Oxford English Dictionary.
Event Photos: 2nd Annual Roast of Iowa City 7/17
The Mill was packed on Sunday for the sophomore edition of the Roast of Iowa City. There was hardly an empty seat since people poured in eager to hear the dirty, hysterical truth about the city we love(hate) so much. The Roasters didn’t just get butts in the seats, they also kept the laughter flowing like cold tap beer.
Iowa City Weekender: July 28-30
This week’s Weekender is for those who are both flush with cash and those who can’t seem to get their hands on any. It’s a poor person’s special this week, if you will.
"American Meat" Plans Iowa City Showings Aug. 3 & 6
In Iowa, perhaps no politics hit home quite like the politics of food. While films like Food Inc. and King Corn have helped familiarize us with the scope of industrial agriculture and the problems associated, American Meat, a new documentary by Graham Meriwether, tells the stories of farmers finding alternative markets for their products, offering […]
Watch Shipbuilding Co. at The Yacht Club
Shipbuilding Co. stopped by The Yacht Club this weekend to play us some songs, and we have some lovely video to share. The Indie rock group played the final set of the night after local group Shame Train finished up a set of their own, and although Iowa City was experiencing flood-like conditions at the time, a host of music fans were in attendance to welcome our friends from the West.
Watch Skye Carrasco on Little Village Live
Last week’s episode of Little Village Live featured local musician Skye Carrasco, marking her second appearance on the show (much to our benefit). Carrasco is back in Iowa City after spending some time writing songs in Portland, Ore., and we couldn’t be happier to have this talented artist in our midst once again.
Haley Bonar Intimate at the Englert: Show Preview & Ticket Giveaway
The first time I saw Haley Bonar (like Bonner) perform was eight years ago. She opened for Low at Old Brick here in Iowa City, promoting her 2003 album, Size of Planets. I was going to see Low, but I was so blown away by Haley’s performance that I immediately rushed over to the merch […]
