Bleeding Rainbow w/ Heavy Times and Huge Lewis
The Mill – August 30 at 9:00 p.m. ($8)
I would say that the upcoming Bleeding Rainbow show at the Mill would be a great show for a date, but the band might not appreciate that sentiment. The Philadelphia-based fuzz pop rockers previously known as Reading Rainbow recently changed their name to something that sounds more grown up and edgy.
Of the reasons given for the name change, the bandโs Tumblr includes avoiding cease and desist letters from PBS, the persistence of people making stupid remarks, and the disapproval of Carrie Brownstein.
Via Bleeding Rainbow’s Tumblr:
READING RAINBOW = BLEEDING RAINBOW
REASONS WE CHANGED OUR NAME FROM READING RAINBOW TO BLEEDING RAINBOW:
– We like the name Bleeding Rainbow better.
– It is trippy as shit.
– We didn’t want to get a cease and desist letter from PBS.
– We were sick of being named after a children’s t.v. show.
– We were sick of people fixating on it and making dumb jokes/comments about it. (even though it was our own damn fault.)
– Carrie Brownstein didn’t like the name Reading Rainbow.
Theyโve also released a new album Yeah, Right that is said to reflect their maturation process as musicians. Yet, despite their efforts to push for a more serious image, the band still puts on a show that’s just as endearing as it is dance-worthy.
One of the opening bands will be Chicagoโs punky noise pop rapscallions Heavy Times. After seeing them open up for the Oblivians a couple of weeks ago, I can vouch for their high-energy stage presence and ability to effectively rock it out (as evidenced in this music video). Check out their latest album Fix It Alone if you need further persuading.
Meanwhile, Iowa City favorites Huge Lewis will be kicking things off for the night. Check out our review of their recent release Ascending into Heaven to find out more about these local garage rockers.
