Sidewalk Chalk w. Gloom Balloon, Mumfordโ€™s

The Yacht Club- April 1 at 9 p.m.

Known for their unique brand of sad psychedelia, the Des Moines duo Gloom Balloon opens for Chicago soul and hip-hop act Sidewalk Chalk tonight at the Yacht Club as part of Mission Creek. Singer-songwriter Patrick Flemming, who began Gloom Balloon as solo project and was later joined by Chris Ford (Christopher the Conquered), performed at first Mission Creek Festival in 2006 and his enthusiasm for it has only grown.

โ€œThe whole city is just buzzing with a fantastic vibe during Mission Creek week!โ€ said Fleming. โ€œHow often can you be walking in the Ped Mall and meet one of your musical heroes? Mission Creek makes the dreams come true!โ€

So what can you expect at a Gloom Balloon show? According to Fleming: grey hair, tight pants and two dudes that can drink a lot of cheap beer. And for this show, new songs. Two weeks ago Gloom Balloon released a limited cassette full of unreleased demos that wonโ€™t make it on their next album. An album which Fleming says, โ€œwill hopefully sound like the soundtrack to an unrealized Disney Movie of the future.โ€
