Wetherby Park Day of Service
Wetherby Park — Friday, Sept. 11 at 3 p.m.
In recognition of the National Day of Service set for Sept. 11, Backyard Abundance and Iowa City’s Parks and Rec. Department are inviting area residents to Wetherby Park from 3-5 p.m. this Friday to help maintain its Edible Forest project.
Founded in 2011 under a “Grow Your Park” grant, Wetherby Park’s Edible Forest is dedicated to practicing ecologically sustainable and rehabilitative gardening techniques that yield edibles like fruits and vegetables. The project was built by members of AmeriCorp, Backyard Abundance, city staff and area residents.
Edible forests help combat food insecurity, foster healthy ecological systems and mitigate climate change. They also help build a sense of community and inclusion through their emphasis on sharing food.
Those interested in volunteering can stop by the park from 3-5 p.m. Be sure to bring comfortable clothes and any gardening tools if you have them.
