This Weekend in Eastern Iowa! Noirvember | John Hopkins Celebration of Life | DRIVE

THE WEEKENDER

Your weekly editor-curated arts compendium

Now that the sun’s setting a little earlier, it’s time to embrace the darkness! FilmScene presents TWO Noirvember offerings this weekend: Bogart and Bacall in ‘Dark Passage’ on Thursday and “best of the genre” contender ‘Out of the Past’ on Monday. Other film, theater, literature, music and rec activities abound. Top pick of the weekend? Saturday night’s celebration of life for local legend John Hopkins, who passed away in 2020. Wanksgiving pulls out all the stops in his honor, with 12 bands on two stages at Gabe’s.

Label Profile: Ox Cart New Music, founded by Gabi Vanek

by Kent Williams, Nov. 7
Gabi Vanek is the “label boss” of Oxcart New Music, but she isn’t precious about it. She didn’t use the word “curate” once in this interview.
“So I have wanted to use the name Oxcart New Music for quite some time, but I kind of made it a catch-all,” she told me. It’s almost as if the sound of the name informed its mission as much as the meaning. It sounds cool.

Press Profile: Midwest Writing Center Press, directed by Ryan Collins

by Lily DeTaeye, Nov 8
Founded in 1979, the Midwest Writing Center (MWC) was created to provide a “permanent home” for writers in the Quad Cities. MWC, the only literary arts nonprofit in the Quad Cities, boasts a long tradition of uplifting local writers through resources, including space for book signings, events and most recently, the addition of its very own press.
