Russians indicted in Trump probe paid for a Hillary-in-a-cage float, but Iowans got there first
On Friday, 13 Russians and three companies—described by The Washington Post as “a notorious Russian group of Internet trolls”—were indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller as part of his investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 election. Tucked away in the indictment is a strange detail that calls to mind a 2016 incident in western Iowa’s Carroll County.

Iowans disapprove of Trump, but Iowa Republicans in Congress keep voting for his policies
A majority of Iowans disapproved of President Trump’s actions during his first year in office, according to a new analysis by Gallup. But that didn’t stop any of the Republicans who represent the state in Congress from voting with Trump more than 90 percent of the time.

Sen. Joni Ernst unintentionally makes Iowans laugh by claiming Trump is a well-respected world leader
Laughter isn’t something that’s usually heard at Sen. Joni Ernst’s town hall meetings, but Ernst’s attempt to portray Donald Trump as a respected international leader caused the audience to burst into laughter at the senator’s town hall in Red Oak on Sunday.

‘Too foul for public consumption’: Steve King doesn’t like bad language, but thinks Trump’s ‘shithole’ comment is great
Like a lot of people on Twitter on Friday morning, Iowa’s Steve King was upset about a public figure’s language. But unlike most, King was upset about a comedian saying “fuck,” not the President of the United States saying, “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” while discussing immigration from Africa and Latin America on Thursday.

Grassley tweets: He’s upset by a Senate snub, but loves what Trump is doing
Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley was up early Thursday morning, and judging by Twitter, he wasn’t happy. At 5:23 a.m., Iowa’s senior senator vented to fellow early-morning tweeter President Donald Trump about not being appointed to the conference committee that will reconcile the tax bill passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate. On Wednesday evening, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell appointed eight Republicans to the committee.

Iowa’s Meredith Corporation will purchase Time, Inc., with help from the Koch brothers
Des Moines-based Meredith Communications—publisher of such magazines as Family Circle and Better Homes and Gardens—has struck a deal to purchase New York-based magazine publisher Time, Incorporated. If the sale is approved by the boards of both companies, Meredith will acquire such well-known magazines as Time, Sports Illustrated and Fortune.

Federal court stops Trump administration attempt to punish ‘sanctuary cities’
On Monday, a federal judge in the Northern District of California issued permanent injunction preventing the Trump administration from cutting off federal funds to so-called “sanctuary cities.” The administration’s attempt to punish those cities with funding cuts is also the subject of lawsuit the city of Chicago has filed against the U.S. Department of Justice. In August, Iowa City joined in a friend-of-the-court brief supporting Chicago in that case.

Iowa’s Jamie Johnson resigns from the Trump administration after CNN exposes his views on African Americans and Muslims
Jamie Johnson, a former radio talk show host on WHO in Des Moines, resigned from his senior position in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Thursday, after CNN reported on some of his public comments on African-Americans and Muslims.

Sam Clovis is out one day after Sen. Grassley defended his nomination to be the top scientist at the USDA
Iowa’s Sam Clovis is no longer President Trump’s nominee for the top scientific position at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It was announced on Thursday that Clovis sent a letter to Trump asking that his name be withdrawn because he did not want his nomination to be “a distraction or negative influence.”
