Iowa reaches ‘peak pig,’ as Trump’s policies damage the pork industry and the pork industry damages the environment
Iowa hit “peak pig” last month, according to figures just published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The state had 23.6 million pigs, an increase of 4 percent from 2017 and most ever recorded in any state. There are only 9.4 million pigs in North Carolina, the state that ranks second in swine.

The only Iowan arrested in the Inauguration Day protests faced months of legal hell
In January 2017, Oliver Weilen made a last-minute decision and joined some friends who were driving from Iowa to Washington D.C. to take part in the protests happening on Inauguration Day. What he didn’t know when he arrived in D.C. was how dystopian his life was about to become. The police would make 234 arrests that day, conducting mass round-ups of protesters. Weilen was the only person from Iowa arrested.

Protesters will gather in Cedar Rapids to push for the reunification of migrant families
On Saturday, there will be rallies protesting in more than 620 cities across the country, including Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, to protest the Trump administration treatment of migrants arriving at the U.S. border with Mexico. The Families Belong Together protests were originally inspired by the administration’s policy of taking children away from their families, and interring them in separate facilities.
