Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner announced on Wednesday he is taking disciplinary actions against a group of sheriff’s office employees for harassing a deputy. The actions are the result of a two-month-long investigation into behavior at the Linn County Correctional Center.

Bever Woods neighborhood under consideration for historic landmark status
The first neighborhood survey scheduled as part of Cedar Rapids’ Historic Preservation Plan will start this month, with an analysis of the historic qualities of the Bever Woods neighborhood. The city received an $18,000 Certified Local Government grant from the state for the survey, which will be completed in two parts by Wapsi Valley Archaeology.

Cedar Rapids issued more than 4,000 tickets in four days after the I-380 speed cameras were reactivated
Cedar Rapids issued over 4,000 tickets generated in four days after it reactivated its I-380 speed cameras at the beginning of July, the Gazette reported on Wednesday. Between July 1-4, the southbound camera at the highway’s S-curve generated 2,272 tickets and its northbound counterpart produced 2,192.

Dance for Our Lives, mixing music and politics to fight gun violence
In the past year, the young activists of March for Our Lives Iowa have staged a die-in, taken part in marches, lobbied lawmakers and stayed active on social media in an attempt on keep people’s attention focus on gun violence and the need for political action to address the problem. On Saturday, they are trying something new: a dance.

A new fireworks regulation is now in effect
Setting off fireworks that have more firepower than a sparkler is illegal in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Coralville, North Liberty and the unincorporated parts of Johnson County. The one big exception has been unincorporated Linn County, and while it still is an exception to the general ban on fireworks, a new regulation regarding the small explosives is now in effect.
