Tonight was epic. Walking into First Methodist for a show was strange at first, bringing back memories of the time I spent in churches as a child. I couldn’t help but whisper, sit politely and try not swear…I was unsuccessful on all accounts. I was redeemed when the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir reminded us it was ok to be a little wild in such a lovely place. I was impressed by the magnitude of this band and how well they were able to make that building come alive with sound. This sentiment was further compounded when Devotchka took the stage, er altar. I don’t know what had a bigger part in taking my breath away — the music Devotchka created or the lights and shapes that danced continuously along the ceiling and walls. I remember saying to a friend “if church had been like THIS as a kid, I would’ve gone every week without protest.” Though I jest, this was more than just a show, it was an experience. And one that I will not soon forget.
