Second City Hits Home

Englert Theatre — Feb. 13, Feb 14 at 8 p.m.

Celebrating 54 years of comedy, the Chicago-based Second City traveling company returns to The Englert Theatre this weekend to perform their new show, โ€œThe Second City Hits Home.โ€

The Second City has become a prominent name in improv and sketch comedy through the success of alumni such as Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Bill Murray, Joan Rivers, Chris Farley, Keegan-Michael Key and many, many other performers and writers who have gone on to do great things.

To celebrate all of the sketches that have been created over the years, this show will feature classic material from the Second City archives, giving the public the chance to see how this material influenced what is now seen on television shows like Saturday Night Live or Key & Peele. Along with this classic material, the troupe will perform new sketches that have been polished on Second Cityโ€™s Chicago stage.

Improvisational comedy is still a big aspect of The Second City, so expect the troupe to incorporate a variety of improvisational games into the show, leaving endless possibilities for what could happen on stage.

University of Iowa alumni Nick Rees is among the Second City troupe that will be performing at the Englert. Rees first became interested in improv while attending the university. This weekend, he will get the chance to return to Iowa City, making these performances truly โ€œhit home.โ€
