Poet Graham Foust will be visiting Iowa City this Saturday for a reading at Prairie Lights. He’ll be reading pieces from his new book To Anacreon in Heaven and Other Poems, published by Chicago’s Flood Editions.
To Anacreon in Heaven is Foust’s fifth full collection of poetry, and is a follow-up to the critically-acclaimed A Mouth in California, which received a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly. Foust’s style is frequently described as subtle and minimal. A review of A Mouth in California by the Oxonian Review argues that his poems take inspiration from the idea that “everyday speech, set slightly out of joint or context, can deliver both personal and collective revelation,” highlighted by lines such as:
“What part of
‘What part of no
don’t you understand?’
don’t you understand”
Foust is no stranger to the state of Iowa, having taught poetry at Drake University from 2002-2005. He holds a PhD from SUNY-Buffalo and currently teaches at the University of Denver.
The reading begins at 7 p.m. on the second floor of Prairie Lights.
