Sage Francis
Gabe’s — Friday, July 24 at 9:30 p.m.
Hip-hop heavyweight Sage Francis is set to perform at Gabe’s this Friday as part of his “Going Through Hell Tour,” touting his latest album Copper Gone and celebrating the ten year anniversary of his critically acclaimed sophomore album A Healthy Distrust.
Francis began writing original lyrics when he was eight years old and he hasn’t stopped rhyming since. He has pumped out over a dozen albums and mixtapes in the last 15 years, and is the founder and CEO of the independent hip-hop record label Strange Famous Records.
Francis’ résumé is as diverse as it is plentiful. The rapper is renowned for his fierce live performances, such as his rap battle victory at Superbowl Battle and back-to-back wins at Scribble Jam in ‘00 and ‘01. He has also garnered attention for his “Sick of” mixtapes such as “Sick of Waging War,” which contains the single “Makeshift Patriot” — released a month after the September 11 attacks on New York. And most recently, Francis released his first album after a four-year hiatus, the aforementioned Copper Gone.
Tickets for this show cost $13-$25. Iowa City’s AWTHNTKTS and Strangers of Necessity will open.
