Folk singer/songwriter and guitarist Haley Heynderickx and brass ensemble The Westerlies performed at Hancher’s intimate Strauss Hall on Thursday, March 7.

The University of Iowa is Heynderickx and The Westerlies was the first stop on their upcoming March tour. Both the 7 p.m., and 9 p.m., performance times were sold-out.

Heynderickx’s introspective songs are infused by her religious Filipino-American upbringing and inspired by the folk music of the 1960s and 1970s mixed with a love of jazz radio. She was joined by The Westerlies, an ensemble that The New York Times calls “an arty quartet … mixing ideas from jazz, new classical, and Appalachian folk.”

The members of the quartet worked with brass musicians in the UI School of Music on campus before their performance.
