It’s (almost) the weekend and wherever you are in the state, there will be plenty of exciting events to check out. If you find yourself in Iowa City on Friday night, consider seeing Y La Bamba, an electric indie folk pop band from Portland at Club Hancher. In Des Moines on Friday, Vincent Neil Emerson, an East Texas songwriter is performing at Wooly’s. There’s a rescheduled benefit show at xBk happening on Saturday for the Iowa Abortion Access Fund. Performers include local favorites Other Brothers, Munk Rivers, Mr. Softheart, Allegra Hernandez, and Dickie. Top pick? The Poetry for Palestine Solidarity Reading at the Iowa City Public Library on Sunday afternoon.

The author of one of 2024’s most acclaimed debut novels will raise the curtains on the 2024 Authors Visiting in Des Moines (AViD) series.

Led by Luz Elena Mendoza, a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and first generation Mexican American, the group’s sound has been described as “psychedelia-dappled dream pop.”
