The Surly Brewing Company of Brooklyn Center, Minn., has begun selling a limited amount of beer in the Des Moines, Ames, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City areas and plans a larger rollout in 2015.
Surly, popular among craft beer enthusiasts, made a grand entrance in Iowa last Thursday, taking over the taps at El Bait Shop in Des Moines.
Surly spokesman Lee Jones said representatives dropped off a pallet of BLAKKR, an Imperial Black IPA, for distribution by Johnson Brothers of Iowa. According to Jones, Surly “will, when available, be distributing a very limited amount of beer to a few select accounts.”
The local accounts that recently received Surly include New Pioneer Food Co-op in both Iowa City and Coralville, all Hy-Vee locations, Johnโs Grocery and Johncyโs Liquor Store in North Liberty. Bootlegginโ Barziniโs in Coralville expects to receive a batch of Surly the next time it is distributed.
Jones said Surly is planning a larger rollout in Iowa in 2015, after the brewery finishes building its $20 million “destination brewery” in Minneapolis. Until then, Jones said eager beer enthusiasts should follow the Johnson Brotherโs Twitter account, @iowacraftbeer, for any news regarding upcoming Surly releases.
