The Roches
The Mill — Suday, Sep. 13 at 7 p.m.
Mother-daughter duo Suzzy Roche and
Lucy Wainwright Roche will perform live at The Mill this Sunday. The duo’s debut album, Fairytale and Myth, won an award for best singer/songwriter album at the 2014 Independent Music Awards.
“I wrote about half of the songs on Fairytale and Myth,” Suzzy said. “The other songs are cover songs Lucy and I like to sing. We originally set out for these songs to help fundraise for Lucy’s solo CD, There’s A Last Time For Everything.”
Although Suzzy and her daughter are dedicated to writing, recording, and performing music, Suzzy said she encouraged Lucy to find another passion if she could.
“This path is not for everyone,” Suzzy said. “It’s a hard life. When you’re young, everyone thinks it’s cool, but then there’s a fork in the road when people get married, get what everyone calls a ‘real job,’ people make money, buy houses, and stop going to shows.”
Though the life of a musician isn’t easy, it has definitely been right for Suzzy. She has recorded numerous albums with her sisters, as The Roches, in addition to two solo albums. She has taught performance at NYU and Princeton University.
“I’ve been on stage all my life,” Suzzy said. “As shy as I am in my life, when I stand on stage, I can’t hide … Anything can happen, and I have to be like a circus performer on a tight wire. When it goes well, people laugh and cry. Laughing and crying … That seems like truth.”
