Brighton MA will head to Iowa City this Saturday for a show alongside Simpleton and City Folk at the Yacht Club. The group has passed through Iowa City a few times previous and are official veterans of the Mission Creek Festival, but even longtime fans have something new to look forward to this weekend.

Their latest album, Oh Lost (2013), was produced by Brian Deck of Engine Studios in Chicago, and the polish really shows. Oh Lost is Brighton MA’s meatiest album to date, and it’s designed in such a way that feels more “complete” than anything else the group has previously recorded, right down to its eerie, almost surreal closing track “Wake the Dead.” Deck has previously worked a number of heavy-hitting artists including Iron & Wine, Modest Mouse, Sage Francis, Owen and the Fruit Bats.

Backed by smart, often through-provoking lyrics, Brighton MA are still strumming guitars and singing their breezy brand of acoustic pop songs. It’s something they do very well. If that’s not really your scene, however, don’t expect them to change your view of the genre. There are a few tracks on Oh Lost that indicate a subtle change in direction, however, and tracks like “Touch” and “Sweet Delusions” really demonstrate the group’s growth potential. The latter is an especially fantastic pop song.

For ticket information, check out the Yacht Club’s event page. This event is an absolute steal at $7.
