The Risin’ Sun w/ Albert’s Ride

The Yacht Club – August 20 at 8:00 p.m. ($6)

Mexico’s counter-culture movement during the 1960’s fostered some amazing, though not very well known in the U.S., psychedelic and garage rock bands. As anyone familiar with the likes of Los Dug Dugs, Los Shakes or The Spiders can attest, these bands knew how to combine American rock and roll with a raw energy and weirdness that was all their own. Following in this tradition comes Mexico City’s The Risin’ Sun, performing at the Yacht Club on August 20.

The Risin’ Sun formed in 2009. And, after cultivating a following in Mexico, they are currently breaking into the international scene. Last year the band grabbed the attention of the MC5’s Wayne Kramer, who ended up producing their first three singles including the song “You Better (Love Me Now).” The Risin’ Sun brings the aesthetics and energy of bands like the MC5 and The Stooges in to their performances, offering a similarly frenetic and somewhat warped take on the peace, love and freedom ideals of the late 1960s.

There will also be an awesome light show! I can’t think of a better way to spend a Tuesday night than stepping into a transnational, psychedelic time machine with some of Mexico City’s finest rock and roll dynamos.

  1. Big fan of Los Dug Dugs et al. Mexican psyche & garage is a rarity in these parts. Go to this show, should be KILLER.
