Mavis Staples w. Danielle Nicole
Englert Theatre — Sunday, June 21 at 7 p.m.
As a successful artist since she was a young teenager singing in The Staple Singers, Mavis Staples has now been an important and relevant part of music for over six decades. This Saturday, the legendary American gospel singer will grace the Englert Theatre stage for an evening of soul-grabbing tunes.
Staples is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and she has released 14 full-length albums including her 2015 EP Your Good Fortune, which she produced with the help of Son Little. The EP is composed of two new tracks written by Little and two that are reworkings of older songs from The Staple Singers’ catalog. With Little’s strong ties to hip hop and Staples powerful vocals, the new songs are both a mixture of beautiful blues with hints of modern beats subtly dispersed throughout. The reworkings are in the same vein as the new tracks — a fresh take on an old, familiar feel.
Opening for Staples is blues singer, Danielle Nicole, best known for her family band Trampled Under Foot, which she started with brothers Nick and Kris. After 13 years however, Nicole decided to go solo and release her self-titled EP with a strong soul vibe with a side of rock and roll.
