Home brewers will share both their beer and expertise at the Spring Home Brewers Share this Saturday at the Sanctuary Pub.

Rye IPA, coffee stout, hibiscus saison, double IPA, strawberry-rhubarb wheat ale, mead and sour ale will be among the many styles available, says Sanctuary owner Daryl “Woody” Woodson.

Some of the more inventive beers being brewed in local kitchens and garages will be available for tasting at the event. Home brewers, Woodson says, are more innovative than commercial brewers because they do not have the pressures to sell beer. A home brewer even brought in a basil IPA one year, Woodson says. Though he admitted that it sounded “absolutely horrid,” it turned out to be wonderful.

“You wouldn’t find a commercial brewer who would try something like that,” Woodson said.

However, if a combination of ingredients doesn’t work out, Woodson says the home brewers will leave it at home.

Though he is unsure how many home brewers will participate, Woodson says he expects eight to 10 to be on hand. Though many of the brewers participating have a lot of experience under their belt, others may be home brewing newcomers who have just graduated from the kit they received for Christmas. The event is a good opportunity for brewers to trade tips and learn from each other, Woodson adds.

Admission to the Home Brewers Share is a $10 donation to the Iowa City Free Medical-Dental Clinic, and tickets can be purchased in advance at the Sanctuary or on the day of the event. All attendees will be entered to win a $20 gift certificate from the Sanctuary.
