As President and CEO of Greater Iowa City, Inc., I’m proud to support the Local Option Sales Tax on the ballot this Nov. 4. It is a community-driven solution that strengthens our region by investing in infrastructure that makes our area a great place to live and work.
We live in a region where our cities are growing and with that growth comes demand pressures. To keep pace, we must invest in public infrastructure, roads, parks, trails, and public spaces. Our municipalities are challenged to meet these growing demands, and this funding will help address housing and other critical needs.
The Local Option Sales Tax also supports our workforce. When we invest in housing, transportation, and vibrant neighborhoods, businesses benefit. These dollars will allow us to fund projects that attract and retain talent, and ensure our community remains inclusive, accessible, and resilient.
Importantly, this tax does not apply to essentials like groceries, gas, rent, mortgage payments, or medicine. Because many visitors spend money here, the tax helps keep local dollars local by supporting community priorities without placing the burden solely on residents.
The Yes On Local Option coalition is a testament to what’s possible when we unite around shared goals. Please join me in voting YES for the Local Option Sales Tax in Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty. It’s a smart, strategic step toward a stronger, more connected region.
