US Congressman Steve King — the man who likened immigrants to puppies in a litter, the man who defended dogfighting and other forms of animal cruelty with an amendment to the Farm Bill, the man who wants to keep abolitionist Harriet Tubman off the $20, the man who keeps the symbol of slavery on his desk at work — exposed his ignorance and prejudice on national television this week with his questioning of the contributions of non-whites to the world.

The remarks garnered a tide of outrage in the news and on social media. And what was King’s response?

When asked about Rep. King’s comments this week, Iowa Rep. and longtime King critic Dave Loebsack told Little Village, โ€œThe extent of Steve Kingโ€™s bigotry and lack of respect for ordinary Americans continues to shock and amaze me.”

Well said Rep. Loebsack. We too are shocked and amazed, but King is an elected official charged with the service of representing the rights of his constituents regardless of race, gender or any other criteria. If there was ever any doubt that Rep. King privileged the interests of the people who look like him and share his beliefs over the interests of others, then the Congressman has made it perfectly clear this week — his biases make him unfit to serve.
