Greetings, Weekenders, and what a weekend it will be!

THURSDAY

This weekend starts off in big fashion tonight, with none other than Big Boi himself, one half of legendary hip-hop group Outkast, and author of one of the best albums to come out this year.

SCOPE and the Hawks Nest present: Big Boi w. Super Mash Brothers | IMU Main Lounge | doors at 5:30 | FREE

Big Boi. For FREE. Need I say more? This is a true hip-hop legend and you should not miss it. NOTE: Due to rain this week, the field at Hubbard Park is too wet for the stage and the 1,000s of dancing feet looking forward to converging on Hawkapalooza this evening. So the show has been moved indoors, to the IMU main lounge.

FRIDAY

Opening Reception: Clear As Day | Public Space One | 5-7 pm | FREE

Oh it’s so good to have PS1 back in action. Downtown’s liveliest, most interactive gallery, the place the conversations happen, IC’s public, living, breathing art forum, is back with another great show.

From PS1’s event description:

Water Vision | Clear As Day

Fascinated by a story of the curious overnight disappearance of an entire lake in Russia a little over five years ago, Clear As Day examines the phenomena of vanishing and appearance and the mutability of the landscape through their first exhibition at Public Space One gallery. Using a variety of materials, including both plants and water, the exhibition will explore a capturing process of water thr…ough the construction and maintenance of a micro lake environment within the gallery.

Clear As Day is Peter Happel Christian (St. Cloud, MN) and Phillip Andrew Lewis (Chattanooga, TN). The collaborative team began in 2007 and continues to manipulate interactions with the landscape as a way of commenting on and understanding our place within it. www.clearasday.org

*According to Clouds โ€˜R Us (cloudsrus.com), the definitive weather website for kids, water vision is characterized by the different intensities of moisture in the air and how humidity compromises a personโ€™s field of vision in the landscape.

Casual Conversation at 4 PM > Exhibition Opening 5-7 PM

Unknown Component CD release party w. Bethann Gavin, Jon Eric and Crystal City | Blue Moose Tap House | 9 pm | $7

Three Little Village Live alums, Unknown Component, Bethann Gavin and Jon Eric (plus Marshalltown duo Crystal City) get together to celebrate the release of a new album from Unknown Component, The Infinite Definitive. The album by Keith Lynch will officially release in a few weeks, and is reviewed in our September issue by Mike Roeder of Time to Play B-Sides. Congratulations, Unknown Component!

SATURDAY

New Bohemia Arts Festival | Intersection of 3rd St SE and 10th Ave SE, Cedar Rapids | Saturday & Sunday | FREE

With more than 30 visual artists and performances a plenty, the New Bohemia Arts Festival is sure to be well worth the drive up to CR.

There are too many events to encapsulate here, so I’m going to go ahead and recommend: Click here to view the complete schedule.

SUNDAY

Last chance to hit the pool | City Park Pool | 1-8 pm | $3

Show the whole town the tan you worked on all summer, and the cannon ball you have been toiling to perfect. If you haven’t allowed yourself a day off since you don’t know when, take one this Sunday, it’s a 3-day weekend so you’ve got no excuse.

If you are looking for reading material, there will be a fresh issue of Little Village on the stands tomorrow afternoon! We are pretty excited about this one, lots of new contributors and a few more color pages than usual. Thanks to all the writers, advertisers and other contributors. We certainly couldn’t do it without you.

Group Hug!

Have a great weekend,

~LV
