Iowa City Weekender: March 14-16

Tracy Morgan
Tracy Morgan will perform at the Englert, Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Hello and welcome to another edition of the Weekender. It’s shaping up to be a great weekend to go hang out downtown for a little while.

Songs of Inexperience // Public Space One // 8:00 p.m. // Free

Songs of Inexperience will be an evening of short films by filmmaker, Jason Livingston. The Iowa Citian (by way of New York) has had his work featured at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Anthology Film Archives, the Austrian Film Museum, the Margaret Mead Film Festival and more. His list of film-related endeavors goes on and on. Livingston received his MFA at the University of Iowa and currently teaches in the department of Cinema and Comparative Literature. This show will be a taste of Livingston’s upcoming show at the Nightingale Theatre in Chicago at the end of the month.

Englert Speakeasy: An Evening of Scotch Tasting // Englert // 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. // $25 Adv., $30 Day Of

Most major cities in American now have some sort of “speakeasy” type of establishment. Usually in a nondescript location and often requiring some sort of password to enter, these prohibition-era-eque bars offer high end cocktails in an atmosphere of another time. Of course, speakeasies no longer exist and, from what I’ve learned through history classes and popular media, they probably weren’t the most inviting of venues. But nowadays the novelty is fun and it’s a good excuse to drink some fancy liquor. The Englert will once again bring this aesthetic to Iowa City, and their ally way door is the perfect entrance for their speakeasy nights. On the Englert stage will be four stations, each with a scotch sample and a food pairing. Food will be provided by the Bread Garden and the scotch samples are as follows:

Oban (14 year)

Balvenie (12 year)

Lagavulin (16 year)

Laphroaig (10 year)

Rocks glasses will be provided by John’s Grocery and they are yours to keep when the night is over. Your ticket gets you all of the above, though more drinks will be available for purchase if you so desire. Also note that there are two time slots to choose from (7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.). See the Englert website for more details.

Tracy Morgan // Englert // 7:00 PM // $49.50 – $59.50

You know Tracy from his breakout performances as a cast member of SNL through the 90s and early 2000s, and/or from the wildly successful NBC comedy, 30 Rock. His character on 30 Rock (Tracy Jordan) is not-so-subtly an extended version of his actual self. He is loud, absurd and at times, a loose cannon. Real life Tracy has just finished up the final season with the 30 Rock crew, and is hitting the Midwest with his standup routine. He mentions this in his interview on Letterman (see video below), which is also a good taste of Morgan’s brand of comedy.
