It’s Friday the 13th for the second time this year. You may be inclined to stay inside, but if your triskaidekaphobia isn’t too bad, here are a few options for getting out of the house in an extended weekender.

Friday, March 13

Man on Wire | ICPL, Downtown IC | 7pm | Free

The ICPL has a stellar month of free Friday night docs. This week, Best Documentary Oscar-winner Man on Wire is showing gratis. Director James Marsh weaves re-enactment, astonishing archival media and first-person interviews with tightrope walker Philippe Petit’s to tell the tale of Petit’s daring, but illegal, 1974 high-wire act performed between the World Trade Center’s twin towers in what some consider, “the artistic crime of the century.”

Saturday, March 14

Geometric Abstractions | Terrapin Coffee, Coralville | 4-7pm | Free

Brothers Robert and David have been running Terrapin for a decade with a reputation for well crafted espressos. They also pick some quality art for the walls in their coffee shop. Stop by Saturday for watercolor and intaglio work from Alan Brink. Even better, the reception includes free music from Unknown Component and complimentary food and beverage.

Monday, March 16

La Strada | PS1, Downtown, Iowa City | 8pm

We just talked about La Strada the film. Now comes La Strada, the band. Out of NYC, La Strada appears with Frances and Twelve Cannons on Monday. CMJ says “the band seamlessly meshes accordions, violins and cellos with rocking guitars and skillfully played drums.” Huffpo also raves (when did they start music reviews?). To get you ready, the band gave us access to an exclusive download track, the fabulous 7-minute epic Starling. Dig.

Tuesday, March 17

Bonnie Prince BillyBonnie Prince Billy | The Picador, IC | 7pm | $15

The biggest show of the month? Well, GZA doesn’t arrive for another two weeks, so we’ll say it is. Will Oldham, AKA, Bonnie Prince Billy brings his warbling voice and acoustic guitar to The Pic on St. Patrick’s Day. Sure, $15 could buy a few pitchers of green beer, but its worth the outlay to see one of the more famous name on the alt-country-punk-roots scene.
