Iowa City Weekender – July 16-19

Thank you, Iowa City, for yet another weekend so amazing that The Weekender practically writes itself…

And another thank you to last night’s special guests on Little Village on the Air — Thanks to Matt Grundstat, Ryan Jeter and Austin Zalatel of Euforquestra!  We were treated to a preview of some of the bands performing this weekend at Camp Euforia, we enjoyed an exclusive listen to several tracks off the upcoming Euforquestra album, Soup, AND we heard a track off an upcoming Matt Grundstat and Kathy Ruestow (of The Diplomats of Solid Sound) collaboration.  Great stuff!  If you missed it live, check back soon for the archived Podcast at

As I’m sure you are aware, you can hear Little Village on the Air every Wednesday, 5-6 pm, on KRUI.

What have we to look forward to this weekend, fair Weekenders?  A balanced blend of folk, funk, civic duty, bookishness, naturalism and indie rock of course

Henhouse Prowlers | Yacht Club | 8 pm | $5

A very unreliable source told me The Henhouse Prowlers used to be the house band at his favorite bar in Chicago.  I said I was surprised they could fit a bar in a henhouse.  He said he misses them still.  He said he’d personally pay back my admission fee if I don’t love them.  He said he loved me too, and that he wanted to hold my hand.  I said no because he sweats heavily and throws a lot of elbows.  But I digress.

Even if you weren’t born in a barn… If you can dig this style, you’ll enjoy this party.

If you can’t dig that style, maybe you’re more….

Samba Nosso | Camp Euforia | 5 pm | 2-day passes $35 advance, $45 door

That’s right, it’s Camp Euforia weekend, and Iowa City’s Samba & Bossa Nova kings are leading off on the M.C. Ginsberg main stage, tomorrow evening.  If you are heading out there for the weekend, be sure you arrive in time to catch the smooth sounds of Samba Nosso!

Blitzen Trapper | Picador | 9 pm | $12

I often worry about the children of Chicago.  You know, the ones that are allowed to enjoy Iowa City for only 9 months out of the year, and then are forced to wile away in sadness all summer in Chi-town.  Take this weekend – Camp Euforia, Blitzen Trapper, the Inaugural Iowa City Book Festival….

Well, Blitzen Trapper shares in our concern, so after playing the Picador this Saturday, they’re going to hit up the Pitchfork Music Festival, and let those poor kids listen too!  What a great band!  Clearly their solid reviews have not yet gone to their heads.

Come down with the matinee of your choice, and call it a weekend!
