Iowa City Weekender: December 10-13

This week’s Weekender is brought to you by the Iowa City Public Library’s downloadable eBook collection!

ICPL eBooks

THURSDAY

Jumbies w/ Collectible Boys | Yacht Club | 9 pm | FREE

Add Thursday nights at The Yacht Club to your list of weekly free shows!  This week’s free fest feature, local Caribbean funk band Jumbies, is sure to take you far far away from the blizzard of ’09.

FRIDAY

Pre-Party: Graduate Painting/Drawing Open House | 109 River St (Graduate Painting Workshop) | 7-9 pm | FREE

Here in lovely Iowa City, our locals have arts and crafts coming out their ears.  With so many creative people doing their proverbial thang, and with the Studio Arts building now all the way out at the old Menards, we must be careful not to forget about all the artists working at the University, quietly chiseling their names into the ivory towers of 21st century art (as we don’t yet know it).  This Friday you have the chance to meet, greet and see the work of 19 MFA painters, 8 of whom are new to the U of I and participating in their first Iowa City showcase.  No need to dig the car out – the ‘picturesque’ Graduate Painting Workshop on River St is just a hop, skip and a jump from downtown, so no reason not to stop by for free refreshments, conversation and, of course, art.

Main Event: DMX | Coralville Marriott | 7 pm | $30 advance/$35 door

The 5th highest selling hip hop artist of all time is comin’ to Coralville Friday night to dazzle fans of all ages with his ruff ryding raptastic-ness.  And, since portions of the proceeds will be donated to the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and Children’s Hospital for research on children’s cancer – you know it’s all for a good cause.  Props to the kids over at amazashow.com for bringing another big show to town!

here’s a video in case you forgot about ol’ Mr X (maybe explicit)

Curious what's happening this weekend? Sign up here to stay in the know.

Also of note: ft(the shadow government) is playing a show at Cornell College in Mt Vernon, early this Friday night (8:30-9:30).  It’s been a while since we’ve had a chance to see them, and they are certainly worth the drive.  If you know what I’m talking about, I don’t need to say more – and if you don’t, then probably nothing I say will get you out to Mt Vernon for a 1 hr show in the frozen middle of a Friday night in December.  But you should.  Really.

Post Party – Cuddle Magic w/ Skye Carrasco | 9 pm | The Mill | $6

12 people and at least as many violins, drums, clarinets, basses, trumpets, keyboards, guitars, banjos, harmonicas, recorders, flutes, and vibraphones get in a van in New York City, drive west to Iowa, turn around and drive back, playing 10 shows in 10 days…  Do they live?  Do they die at each other’s hands?  What variety of magic is it that keeps these people alive in such dire circumstances?  Well, it is the sweet sweetness of Cuddle Magic, of course.  Spend your day getting a masters in craft zoology, and spend your night enjoying the traveling 12-ring musical cuddle circus at the Mill, this Saturday night at 9.  No animals will be harmed, I think.

The perfect end to the craftiest weekend of the year – the annual show and sale from Eastside Artists is going on Friday, Saturday and Sunday – right downtown in the Masonic Building.  Helpful tip: bring cash or check as no cards will be accepted.  Cafe del Sol is sponsoring with coffee, and more than 20 artists will have their wares on display.
