This Weekender is brought to you by … Stuff Etc!

stuff

Sweet home Iowa City, you don’t need me to tell you what time it is.

Those of you celebrating your first IC Hallow’s Eve, you are in for a treat and I ain’t lyin’, er, trickin’?…  Forget it.  Put your lame Halloween memories behind you.  You are in Iowa City now, and nobody does it better.

THURSDAY

Free Dinner! | Old Brick (Clinton and Market) | 6-8 pm | FREE

Okay, not very Halloween themed, forgive me.  But who can say no to a delicious (and FREE) dinner from The Red Avocado?  Who can say they don’t support the Healthy School Lunches campaign?  Who deigns to complain if the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine wishes to provide us with lovely dance performances?  If you are not convinced, then you should especially take this opportunity to learn about the benefits of good nutrition for children, and find out why an Iowa senator, educators, parents, and students support the campaign to get healthy, vegetarian options in school lunch lines. Receive free literature and kid-approved recipes, and sign the Healthy School Lunch petition.

To reserve seats, please contact Elizabeth at 319-358-0134 or ecummings@cancerproject.org.

Speakers include Sen. Joe Bolkcom, Carol Throckmorton, R.D., Lynn Calvert, R.N., and Tara Gallardo Russell, health secretary for an eastern-Iowa public school.

monsters brawl

FRIDAY

Monster’s Brawl: Capitol City Roller Girls vs Quad City Rollers | Coralville Marriott | 7 pm | $?

Curious what's happening this weekend? Sign up here to stay in the know.

Damn right – It’s roller derby time.  Use this map so you can get to the Coralville Marriott and make it back to civilization in time for the other parties.  A Little Village photographer will be there, so you should be too!  Who knows, you could be immortalized in one of our online photo albums!

After the brawl…

Petit Mal / Lipstick Homicide / Ghostbustaz- Bless Your Little Heart / Stop, Runk and Roll / Land of the Dead (respectively) CD release party | 9 pm | Picador | $???

Public School Records Rock and Roll and Rap show featuring…

Petit Mal – CD release for their new album Bless Your Little Heart
Lipstick Homicide – CD release for their new album Stop, Runk, and Roll
Ghostbustaz – CD release for their new album Land of the Dead
along with… Porno Galactica and Doctor Don Dre Awesome (Brian from the Miracles of God) on the wheels of steel.

I can’t speak to the others, but from what I’ve heard of the new Petit Mal album, it may be one of the best to come out of Iowa City in recent memory.  Go pick up a copy, you won’t be disappointed… If you agree that Ghostbustaz is one of the best band names you’ve heard in a while, and if that makes you somewhat curious… here’s a new Ghostbustaz video

SATURDAY

Annual Halloween Cover Show | The Mill | 8 pm | $6

The Public Property party at the Industry is going to be sweet.  There’s going to be a free keg and some horror movie watching for the early birds, and Public Property is one of Iowa City’s best bands.  However, the bands that are putting together the cover show at the Mill are doing something that has never been done before, and never will be done again… So we’re giving them the nod:

Shame Train as Fleetwood Mac
The Diplomats of Solid Sound as The Velvet Underground (with Andre Perry of The Lonelyhearts as Lou Reed)
Mannix as Weezer
Lipstick Homicide as The Ramones
Everything’s Ruined as Faith No More
Tim Krein as Hank Williams
8pm doors / $6 cover

Anyway you are encouraged to go everywhere and do everything.  Anything is possible on Halloween!

SUNDAY

Slow Food Iowa City – Day of the Dead event | La Reyna (1937 Keokuk St.) | $25-$30 (purchase tickets here)

Enjoy a traditional Day of the Dead feast at the best Mexican place in town – La Reyna – and support Slow Food Iowa City.  SFIC is always looking for people who are interested in getting more involved, so if that’s something you are into, please bring your ideas and your appetite!

Have fun you people, ghouls, ghosts and goblins!
