A favorite of college students, screen printing fanatics and discount soda lovers, the Den will be leaving the Iowa City downtown scene. The store at 123 E. Washington St. will be closing on Dec. 31 after 15 years of business.

Due to high rent prices and the impact of Washington St. construction on foot traffic, the store decided not to renew its lease for 2017, according to a comment by supervisor Craig Spencer published in the Press-Citizen.

The Washington Street Streetscape Project was adopted in 2014 as part of the Iowa City and Pedestrian Mall Streetscape Plan. Construction began back in April 2016 and the street is scheduled to be open to full traffic later this month.

The Den will be hold a closing sale through the end of the year, with all merchandise discounted 30 to 40 percent.
