The American Institute of Architects Central State Region honored Iowa City’s Neumann Monson Architects with two design awards last week for two projects located in Johnson County, Iowa.
Neumann Monson Architects accepted two Citation Awards on Friday, October 25 in Oklahoma City — one for a private residence located in rural Johnson County and one for the University of Iowa West Campus Transportation Center. The two designs were selected from a pool of 179 entries across five Midwest states.
Judges selected the Johnson County residence after deeming it an “elegant representation of a traditional farmhouse” with “innovative, creative and ingenious” interiors, according to a statement released Tuesday by Neumann Monson Architects. The rural residence is situated next to ten acres of restored prairie and 200 acres of farmland.
The West Campus Transporation Center — which includes a bus interchange for the University of Iowa’s campus-wide transit system as well as offices for the UI’s Parking and Transportation department — features an enclosed 750-foot walkway that connects several University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics structures. Judges said the design is “evocative of movement,” noting that its simple box, hovering above the bus interchange and providing people with a protective canopy, is “a symbol of the power of mass transportation.”
