Mid Con 2014

Clarion Highlander Hotel (2525 N Dodge St., Iowa City) — Sept. 19-21

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s the first-ever Mid Con Comics Show swooping into Iowa City this weekend. The two-day event will feature panel discussions with comic book creators, plenty of memorabilia, a board-game room and creation room where guests can try their hand at making their own comics.

Special guests include Mike Norton, the brains behind the Battle Pug series, and Phil Hester, an illustrator for Kevin Smith’s revival of The Green Arrow, among other comic book creators and cosplayers.

Saturday will host the bulk of events, with a cosplay masquerade, art auction, and panels covering topics like how to write and draw comics and tips on making money comic in the book business. Attendees can also chat with comic book creators in Artists Alley where artists will sell their art and comics.

For kids 18 and under, Mid Con will host a free Comic Book School on Friday from 4-6 p.m. — an intensive workshop that covers all the comic book basics. Special guests Phil Hester and Aaron Gillespie will lead the session.

Around 160 people have already registered for the convention. Those who wish to attend can sign up for either the entire weekend or just one day.
