Iowa City Improv Art Series

Trumpet Blossom Cafe — Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

A new(ish) improv art series is heading to the Trumpet Blossom Cafe. The free series will take place at Trumpet Blossom at 7:30 pm on the first Wednesday every month and will feature only improvised material, mainly music, art and comedy.

Tonight’s program will begin with improvised music by Curt Oren, Jack Lion, Brooks Strause, Brad and Cole Highnam. Kristin Owens will create improvised art and Lev Cantoral will perform a puppet show. Dana T will also perform stand up.

Tonight will technically be the second improv show, although organizer and Iowa City musician Curt Oren said the first show was more of a trial run, as much of the planning and promotion was done last minute. Oren’s original plan was to feature solely improvised music, but ended up with a combination he felt worked well.

“I want to make others interested and excited about the artistic community here, and really provide a space for people to collaborate and show off their skills a little bit,” Oren said.

The series was Oren’s idea, inspired by improvised music he heard in larger cities. His goal was to create an inclusive space for local musicians, artists and performers to gather for a few hours and collaborate with one another. The event is open to public performances, and those interested can contact Curt Oren at curt.oren@gmail.com.
