Up on the Wooftop Premeire

Paramount Theatre — Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.

A feature-length holiday movie shot in Iowa premieres this weekend at Paramount Theatre. Up on the Wooftop, the family friendly tale of a talking dog who dreams of leading Santa’s sleigh, directed by UI alum Joe Clarke and produced by Iowa based Backrow Studios, will debut on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Little Village was able to catch up with Clarke in anticipation of his film’s premiere.

How’d you get into the movie making business?

I come from a family of big, hilarious personalities. My mom and I went to Lethal Weapon 4 in theaters when I was in fourth grade. We were big time into action flicks. And she still is — White House Down is like her favorite movie of all time. Then my friends and I started dinking around with the camera around junior high. One thing lead to another, and here we are, making some talkin’ dog flicks. When you’re on set of a movie, it’s pretty much an elaborate excuse to hang out with friends, and other film lovers. It’s a great time.

When did you first decide to make this movie?

‘Wooftop’ started development back in April of 2014. So it’s been about a year and half process. It came about after some conversations with a company in L.A., with the goal being to make a movie that reached an international audience.

What’s been the most challenging part of the process? What’s been the most rewarding?

Just about every stage of production has a soul crushing aspect to it. The whole thing is a great exercise in discipline and patience, two qualities that aren’t necessarily my strong suits.

What do you think your next project will be?

Probably Wooftop 2, 3, 4, and then I’ll probably move my way into the adult entertainment industry.

Tickets to this event are $15 and include a red carpet event and pre-screening party.

Simeon Talley is Little Village's community manager.
