Comedian Tom Grean
Penguin’s Comedy Club — Thursday, Jan 15 at 7:30 p.m.
Tom Green performs stand up at Penguin’s Comedy Club tonight, and his comedy hasn’t mellowed a bit with age.
“It’s scaled up. I never hold back,” Green recently told the Peoria Journal Star in regards to the comedic ridiculousness that fueled the shock humor of his MTV talk show and brought him to fame. “This is definitely as outrageous as anything I’ve ever done. In fact, sometimes I think it’s more outrageous because I’m talking about subjects that matter.”
In his stand-up, Green brings his trademark manic intensity to bear on observational comedy, occasionally weaving social commentary into his routines. In his stand up, a seemingly zany bit about airport security can evolve into an incisive, yet unpretentious takedown of how absurdly authoritarian our society has become since 9/11.
Green performed stand up as a teenager, but didn’t take up performing professionally until 2009, when the success of his internet-based (and home-based) talk show Tom Green’s House Tonight led to offers to perform stand-up. In 2010, Green went on an international stand-up tour and has been getting up on stage steadily ever since.
