SCOPE Productions Presents: CHVURCHES

The UI Pentacrest — Friday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m.

The University of Iowa and the undefeated Hawkeyes (5-0) welcome back alumni this Friday, Oct. 9, kicking off a weekend full of events with their annual Homecoming Parade, beginning at 5:45 p.m. To augment one of the University’s most anticipated annual events, UI SCOPE Productions will bring the popular Scottish band CHVRCHES to play a free concert on the Pentacrest Lawn at 8 p.m.

The concert will follow both the parade and homecoming court coronation, a highlight of the Homecoming traditions for many. SCOPE’s choice of electro-pop band CHVRCHES leans bold in comparisons to recent years, which were slotted with 90s alternative bands The Wallflowers and Third Eye Blind.

CHVRCHESโ€™ brand new album, Every Open Eye reached No. 1 on Billboardโ€™s Top Rock Albums shortly after its Sept. 25 release. The band’s unique synthesized pop beats blend seamlessly with lead singer Lauren Mayberryโ€™s ethereal, and oftentimes soft, vocals. Their sound is equally dancey and emotional, echoing other electronic chart toppers such as St. Lucia, MS MR, Purity Ring and HAIM. CHVRCHESโ€™ fans and the unfamiliar alike are lucky to have the opportunity to see them play for free this weekend.

In addition to the campus-wide celebrations, many individual UI departments are celebrating in their own way. The College of Public Health will host a pregame breakfast Saturday morning, and the College of Law will hold a pregame cookout, reunion brunch, class dinners and Sunday brunch. For information about other departments’ homecoming events, see the Alumni Association’s website.
