The Peace Tree Brewing Company is taking over…this Friday at Short’s Burger & Shine, that is.
From 3-7 p.m., Short’s will host a Peace Tree tap takeover. All 10 tap lines will be serving beer
brewed at the Knoxville, Iowa brewery. Peace Tree owner Megan McKay Ziller said she and
other brewery representatives will be on hand to talk beer, showcase Peace Tree’s portfolio and
tap a couple rare, experimental brews.
The beers available on Friday will be Red Rambler, Rye Porter, Hop Wrangler 3 IPA, Blonde
Fatale, Hefeweizen, Black River Gumbo Stout, Double IPA and Imperial Stout. Rounding
out the takeover are two exclusive beers that will only be available at Friday’s event: Double
Dry Hopped IPA (brewed with New Zealand Galaxy hops) and Oak Barrel Aged Cornucopia
(brewed with Brettanomyces, a strain of yeast used in many Belgian ales).
According to McKay Ziller, this is the second Peace Tree tap takeover in Iowa City. The
Hideaway hosted a miniature takeover during national Bike to Work Week in May of this year.
“[A takeover] generates a lot of excitement for the establishment since it is not often an entire
brewery’s line up is presented in one place,” she wrote in an email. Takeovers, she added, give
breweries the chance to offer their entire selection to customers instead of the one or two beers
usually on tap and allows brewers to mingle with those savoring their product.
“We would love to do some more in the future because it allows us to get in front of our
customers, find out directly what their preferences are and answer questions,” Ziller
wrote. “In any business when you can get out and meet your end customers a lot of learning
takes place on both sides.”
