Early voting in the March 4 special election to fill the open seat on the Iowa City Council in District C starts on Wednesday. There will be two candidates on the ballot: Oliver Weilein and Ross Nusser.
Weilein won a landslide victory in the Feb. 4 primary, receiving 69 percent of the vote. Nusser finished second with 27 percent of the vote. A third candidate, Sharon DeGraw, received 4 percent of the 932 votes in the district. DeGraw announced on Jan. 24 she was withdrawing from the race, but early voting had already begun, so her name remained on the primary ballot.
Only residents of District C could vote in the primary election, but all registered voters in Iowa City can vote in the March 4 special election.
Early in-person voting starts at 8 a.m. on Wednesday at the Johnson County Administration Building (913 S Dubuque St). Early in-person voting will be available during the auditor’s office normal hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office will be closed on Monday, Feb. 17 for the Presidents’ Day holiday.
There will be no drive-through voting in the special election, but the auditor’s office will have extra hours on Saturday, March 1. The office will be open for early voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Early in-person voting ends at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 3.
Mail-in absentee ballots in the special election must be received in the Johnson County Auditor’s Office by the time polls close at 8 p.m. on Election Day, March 4.
