Sister Helen Prejean

Pappajohn Business Building, Room W10 — Fri., Apr. 8 at 6:30 p.m.

Anti-death penalty crusader Sister Helen Prejean, who retold her counsel and spiritual guidance of executed convict Matthew Poncelet in the 1993 book Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States, will talk about life, death and social justice at the University of Iowa on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in room W10 of the Pappajohn Business Building.

In 1995, Dead Man Walking was made into a movie starring Susan Sarandon. Sarandon’s portrayal of Prejean won her an Oscar for Best Actress. The book was also adapted into a play and an opera.

In 2004, Prejean published her second book, The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions. She is presently at work on another book, River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey.
