Dance scholar celebrates Michael Jackson with Dance Party at Public Space One

Michael Jackson Dance Party Forever

Public Space One — Friday, May 8, 6 p.m. – 12 a.m.

A night of dance and appreciation dedicated to the King of Pop takes place at Public Space One this Friday, courtesy of local Michael Jackson scholar Elizabeth June Bergman. And no, the term scholar isn’t being applied lightly. Bergman is heading to Temple University this fall to pursue a PhD in dance studies that will focus on Michael Jackson, and she is throwing the party as a goodbye to friends and the community of Iowa City.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with three twenty-minute presentations drawing from three papers Bergman has written on Jackson, exploring his impact on dance with regards to issues of class, race and cross-cultural appeal.

“I’m very interested in how he had so many meanings around the world, but he still was able to make everyone lose their shit.” said Bergman. “There is nowhere I can think of where there aren’t rabid Michael Jackson fans.”

At 7:30 p.m., a five-hour marathon of Michael Jackson’s dance music kicks off, featuring everything from the Jackson 5 to Jackson’s solo career to his posthumous releases. Videos highlighting Jackson’s dance routines will be projected for the duration of the party. Bergman encourages all attending to dance, and she herself plans to dance throughout the entire event.

Or to put in another way, Bergman wants everyone to rock the night away.
