Laugh away the highs and lows of the holidays at City Circle Acting Company’s Sugar & Spice: A Nice & Naughty Holiday Cabaret on Dec. 13 and 20 at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts.
The cabaret is split into two separate shows: a “nice” show and a “naughty” show, with a short break in between. The “nice” portion is a traditional, family-friendly Christmas pageant, while the “Naughty” portion presents a more sarcastic, teasing tone about the holiday season, with comedic numbers fit for older audiences.
“For many of us, the holidays bring peace, joy and family…but also frustration and rage. We’d like to show both,” said Chris Okiishi, director of City Circle.
The cabaret is made up of various group and solo performances including a children’s choir, a Rockettes-style Christmas number and a bell choir. Besides the holiday standards, there will also be short skits, comedy and new arrangements of Christmas songs written specifically for this event. There is also one original song that is “decidedly naughty,” a song about holiday overeating, a song rallying action against the mistreatment of elves, Christmas-themed parodies of two songs from Les Miserables and a punk-rock version of a Dr. Seuss poem.
“We aim to have something for everyone; if you love the holidays, fear the holidays, are sick of the holidays—this show is for you!” said Okiishi.
The “nice” portion of the show begins at 7:30 p.m., with the “naughty” portion to follow at 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 per individual show, or $15 for both.
